HIGHWAY TO HELL
|
By all appearances Trevor was a fine young man, well groomed, well mannered and very well spoken. He was sitting on the short brick wall at the center of the cross walk that traverses Monterey Street from Second Street. The city streets were closed as hundreds (maybe thousands) of folks had streamed downtown to enjoy the summer evening and July 3rd Street Dance.
As I crossed the street I approached Trevor, his two brothers to his side, I handed each one a special 4th of July million dollar bill tract. I told them there was a million dollar question on the back, “Will you go to heaven when you die?” They all were anxious to engage in the discussion so I sat down right there in the crosswalk and started talking to them about God’s moral standard and whether or not they thought they had kept the Ten Commandments. Our conversation quickly accelerated to Hebrews 9:27 “And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment.” As we considered God’s Law, His righteousness, and His judgment, in the light of our shortcomings, I could literally see conviction come upon Trevor’s face. He clearly realized the seriousness of our conversation as he began to recognize his true standing before God without Christ. His brothers were listening intently as well. I am always amazed at how open people are to talking about the things of eternity, how willing they are to discuss death and the afterlife and how appreciative they are to hear about the salvation offered through Jesus Christ alone. I told Trevor and his brothers that I had some good news for them. I told them about the virgin birth of Christ, how He was God in the flesh, that He never sinned in thought, word or deed and how He bore our sins on the cross at Calvary, and rose again, that we might be reconciled to God. I told them that “we did the crime and Christ paid the fine”, that a legal transaction took place on that day; a transaction that calls for sinners to repent, to trust Christ, and Christ alone, to deliver them on Judgment Day. Oh what a joy to share the good news of salvation! Right about then, a women my age walked up and sternly asked me “What are you talking about with my sons?” I smiled as I stood up and told her that I was sharing the Gospel with them. And do you know what she said to me? She said, “Thank you!” As I walked away toward my car, the street band was blaring out “Highway to Hell, I’m on the Highway to Hell” My heart was broken hearing that truth, so boldly proclaimed, that hundreds (maybe thousands) were dancing and singing along to the reality of their eternal destination. The harvest truly is plentiful but the laborers are few. Come join in the harvest! |
| WAL-MART WITNESSING |
Walmart is known as the “Saving Place” so we set up a table in front of the Gilroy store on Saturday and prayed that God would save some! We had plenty of gospel tracts and were ready to share the Good News with whoever God brought our way. Of course, first you must tell the bad news so the Good News makes sense. That’s why it is so important for ALL Christians to learn how to share the gospel biblically using God’s Law first, to convict of sin, before sharing the Good News of the Cross.
